![]() More users: The incredible growth in the number of Internet users is astounding. The number of user is estimated to be between 40 and 50 million, but no one knows for sure. One number used to measure growth is the number of hosts as the chart below indicates: ![]() More demanding applications: Before Web browsers were invented, traffic on the internet was limited mostly to text. Text requires relatively few network resources. Each text character requires 8 bits to send over the network so an average 1 page E-mail would require thousands of bits. At a modem speed of 28.8 kbps this would take just seconds to transmit. With web browsers came graphics. Graphics often exceed millions of bits requiring minutes to download. Video and sound files require even more. Video files are typically 10 - 50 times the size of images and require hours to download at 28.8 kbps speeds.
