All IP addresses are controlled by the InterNIC a cooperative activity between the National Science Foundation, Network Solutions, Inc., and AT&T.
![]() Besides the allocation of unique IP addresses, the InterNIC is responsible for the registration of Domain Names. Domain names are a type of nickname used to identify a particular server rather than refer to its IP address. Domain names can also refer to individual websites stored on a single server. Domain names use the top level domain's address suffixes like ".edu", ".gov" ".org", and ".mil" to describe the type of organization or country to which they belong. Since humans do not remember numbers well, the InterNIC maintains a complex database system for mapping domain names to IP addresses. Think of the InterNIC as a master index file of all Domain Names used in the world... www.whitehouse.com = 198.137.240.91 www.internic.net = 192.20.239.132 You might try a visit to the InterNIC registration service to see about registering your own domain name.
