the Internet was born. The US Department of Defence commissioned ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) to build a network between UCLA, Stanford, UCSB, and the University of Utah.

Long distance lines phone lines between the campuses were leased to transmit data back and forth. The first PROTOCOLS were developed to be able to send digital information on analog phone lines.

Electronic mail between campuses was one of the first applications developed.
