Way back in Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. Not only did it make him very rich, it changed the world. Bell capitalized on the invention of the telephone for 17 years, and formed the world's first telephone company. In providing service in many cities and more importantly between them, he not only invented the telephone ... but the first telephone network.

When his patent expired 17 years later, 6000 telephone companies immediately sprang up to compete. But Bell was very shrewd and allowed no connection to his long distance networks. A policy that would last well into our lifetimes.

At the turn of the 20th Century American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) was the only long distance option and like its founder, AT&T fought attempts of others to connect to its Inter-city networks ...
