Even though the majority of information available on the Internet, is worthwhile and not offensive, parents and managers may feel the need to exercise control over what comes across Internet.

Since ISPs typically do not restrict user access to offensive sites or take responsibility for consequences, parents and managers are on their own.

There are filtering programs available that will automatically prevent access to the objectionable sites on the Web. Some allow you to configure the filter parameters for obscene URLs or words. Others check on a voluntary rating system called PICS for Platform for Internet Content Selection.

The following animation demonstrates how these programs work.

A few of the commercial filter programs are CyberPatrol, CyberSitter, SurfWatch, and NetNanny. Databases of objectionable sites must be continually updated since the Internet is always changing.
