 :: Legal & Moral Issues

::   n e w   i s s u e s ?  ::

The Internet has certainly raised much concern about personal rights and government responsibilities. However, it is doubtful that it has created any new moral or legal dilemmas that have not been argued in the past.

However, the unregulated, wide reaching, and transient nature of the Internet has magnified several old issues.As with any other communications tool, the opportunities for positive and negative use of the Internet are enormous and deserve careful consideration.

Three key legal and moral issues covered in this module are:

Freedom of Speech
Do you have the right to say anything you want on the Internet? Do others have the right to say anything they want about you?

Copyright Protection
Do you have the right to copy graphics or Web site information for your own use? Is your information, published on the Web, protected by copyright laws?

Right to Privacy
Do you have the right to encrypt your electronic communication so that the government can’t read it?
