The open nature of the Internet makes it particularly vulnerable to security problems. It was designed to share information and enable communication between all computers. However, various security measures have been developed and added to meet the concerns of users.

It should be made clear that Internet security is never a 100% proposition. However, a business should attempt to find a level of comfort between security and cost to the organization, in money, time and user frustration.

There are three general levels of Internet security.

Physical: This level deals with the physical security of computers, servers, cables and back-up media. It includes security policies, back-up strategies, password protection and general system maintenance.

Firewalls: This level deals with the interface to the Internet. It includes all the hardware, software and processes required to effectively filter activity between the Internet connection and the corporate network.

Encryption: The highest level of security is encryption. It secures data during transfer and storage even if authentication and filtering techniques have failed.
