Consider you own personal security. Where are you at most risk of personal harm? At home? At work? Or traveling in between?

Threats to our personal security come from many directions. Some are natural disasters like floods and earthquakes. Others are unintentional manmade threats such as automobile accidents. Still others are intentional malicious threats by other people.

Because these threats are so varied and random, they are difficult to guard against. Each precaution we take offers additional security. Yet, it is hard to feel 100% safe in this world of ours.

Similar risks are encountered on the Internet Threats to data security come from the same natural disasters, accidents, and maliciousness.

What can happen? Hardware can be damaged or stolen. Data can be altered, deleted, stolen from local systems. Data may be intercepted in transit and altered or deleted.

Security on the Internet is a big problem. The FBI estimates a $7.5 billion business loss each year due to security problems. Every year there is an increase in Internet security breaks. Studies show that security remains the number one concern of organizations connecting to the Internet

Combating these problems requires action at many levels. But security is a complex ongoing process, not a single action or product.

It is also important to realize that security comes at a cost. Internet users will experience increased inconvenience as the level of security increases. For example, two levels of password protection and permissions that expire often force users to jump through additional hoops to get their work done.
