The promise of computers providing widespread user friendly communication, data accessibility and engaging interactivity, has largely fallen short. Until recently, networking systems could be characterized as having unfriendly interfaces, difficult data accessibility and insanely expensive.

Internet technology has rekindled the promise of the computer networks. Suddenly there there easy to use, effective and inexpensive tools for building network applications which can be viewed by all platforms (Mac, PC and workstations). Even the average computer user can participate in electronic publishing through the simplicity of Web page authoring.

There is great excitement surrounding the implementation of these new capabilities to improve the way companies communicate and work with information.

Recent surveys reveal a rising percentage of companies are implementing Intranet technology. The Intranet market is expected to quadruple for each of the next few years. Another survey indicates that at least 80% of Web application development is for Intranets.

The popularity of Intranets is clear. Here are the most obvious reasons for their success.

Consistent user interface reducing training needs and increasing general ability to operate within the system.

Open systems enabling cross-platform development and standards-based tools to allow much greater flexibility.

Inexpensive development Through low or no cost tools encourages innvation and trial projects.

Enjoyable! Multimedia interfaces make communications much more interesting.
