An Intranet is basically an smaller Internet built and used within a private computer network. Intranets use exactly the same protocols and applications found on the Internet, such as email, web browsing, newsgroups, and file transfer. Intranets do not have to be connected to the Internet to function.

However most Intranets are connected to the Internet, but very carefully. Because of the requirements to keep company data secure, access by outsiders is restricted by firewall systems. Firewalls perform complex filtering of messages allowing insiders to travel out but preventing outsiders from coming in.

Intranet users benefit from much greater data transfer speeds. Private networks running at speeds of 10 Mbps are 40 times faster than most home users access with their 28.8 kbps modems.

This means that Intranet users can benefit from high bandwidth applications, such as multimedia with sound, video and animation.
