Online Services
On-line services such as CompuServe, America Online, and Prodigy are proprietary services with controlled content. Even though they have hurried to provide customers with full Internet access, they are losing many customers to direct Internet access. Controlled content will benefits certain audiences, but most will consider it a limitation. The influence of on-line services is expected to wane in the coming years.
Publishing and Media Firms Traditional print publishers such as Ziff-Davis, CMP Media, , and IDG have found a home away from home on the Internet. Their electronic magazines (e-zines) provide industry-specific information, events, and product reviews dynamically. These companies which have mastered online intereractive publishing will have great advantage in the future.
Broadcast/Communications Companies Real-time news pieces hot from the wire, radio broadcasts, and even movie and video clips are being delivered via the Internet. Reuters, News Corp., Time-Warner, and Marimba are some of the leading players. These companies individualize the news.
Advertising and Public Relations Firms These firms are slowly being driven by their clients to fully exploit the new medium. It is exactly these firms which are in the best position to take advantage of the enormous race to publish on the Web.
Web Development Houses Ever since the development of the Hypertext Mark-up Language, companies have appeared ready to build Web sites for any paying customer. These development houses vary widely on design quality and technical expertise. And even though the advertising and public relation firms are finally providing the same services, there is probably enough Web design work to go around for many years to come.
