How would you connect three computers together that needed to share information? Just run wires from each computer to the next?

But, suppose that the computers are many miles apart and and that wiring is expensive. Connecting each to each is probably not the best strategy. What other strategy is possible? You might suggest the following, which saves on wire.

This seems like a good strategy. But how is data routed to the correct destination computer? Does this tie up the middle computer?

If we add the concept of a router, then we have a fairly efficient system and one that can grow easy. The same concept is true for connecting whole networks with each other.
