Networks are built to move information, in the form of bits (1’s and 0’s), between computers.

The speed of moving information is called bandwidth. Bandwidth is the amount of data that can travel across a communications pathway in a given amount of time. Bandwidth is measured in bits per seconds.

A modem speed of 28.8 Kbps translates to 28,800 bits per second. A line bandwidth of 1.54 Mbps equals 1,540,000 bits transferred in one second.

Here are some equivalents that will help you get a feel for the concept. An average book of 300 pages would take approximately 45 seconds to transmit at 28.8 kbps. At 1.54 Mega bits per second, the same book would take slightly under a second to transmit.
