Like most Internet applications, IRC runs under a client/server model.
![]() Client users run an IRC client program on their PCs which connects to one of many IRC servers on the Internet. IRC client software is available for free on all systems, from mainframes to PCs. The most recent IRC client programs have adopted the graphical, point and click interface, making them much easier to use. Server IRC servers manage the messages between IRC users so that all users experience the same conversation. Messages are passed to all participants in a given conversation immediately. Here is a short animation illustrating how IRC works.
