Internet Relay Chat (IRC) or simply Chat is a client/server system which enables people to meet on-line and converse in real time by typing comments. Users have the option to chat in groups or privately on various topics. Warning! IRC can be surprisingly addictive!

IRC was started in Finland in the 1970s and has been used widely around the world. Like other Internet applications, IRC began with a text only, command line interface, but has been upgraded and greatly improved.

IRC gained notoriety during the 1991 Persian Gulf War, when IRC users gathered on a single channel to hear these reports from around the world. Also, during the coup against Boris Yeltsin in 1993, IRC users from Moscow gave live IRC reports about the unstable situation there.
