UNIX is the traditional operating system of the Internet. It has been around for decades and is particularly well suited for large distributed systems.

If you remember DOS, the command line interface to early PCs, then you have an appreciation for the UNIX interface. It is an interface only a mother (or UNIX guru) could love. The following commands are the original FTP commands:

get filename transfers file from Server down to the local PC.

put filename transfers file from local PC up to the server.

ascii toggles the transfer method to ASCII, or text mode. This mode is used for text & html files.

binary toggles the transfer method to binary mode for images, movies and program files.
