Newsgroups were started by a couple of Duke University grad students way back in 1979, when they connected mainframe computers together to exchange information with the UNIX community. This network, originally called Usenet, grew into a worldwide voluntary exchange of newsfeeds with an ever widening breadth of discussion groups.

Think of newsgroups as a worldwide bulletin board system. Within the Internet, this is the area where most people interact and discuss topics of common interest. You can post questions, get advice, make bold statements, possibly get flamed, and generally feel a part of a global community.

There are thousands of newsgroups covering every topic imaginable, from computers to recreation and social issues to news. In newsgroups, you can find job postings, advice, coming events, service referrals, and even religious discussions. You will also find sounds and photos to download.

Newsgroups provide a way to meet people who share your interests from all over the world, without ever having to leave your computer. And you can talk to them virtually anytime you like.
