There are scores of E-mail clients (E-mail progams) running on dozens of platforms on the Internet. Each program has its own unique look, feel and method for getting the job done ... but there are a few elements are always common between them.

There are will always be a place that asks for the address of the person you want to send the message to. Enter in the E-mail address of the recipient by typing inside the appropriate area.

The next important component is the message area to write the content of your E-mail message.

The Send feature is used to finally transmit your E-mail to its intended destination when you are done creating your message.

You also have a few optional features that are common to most software:

Type the E-mail addresses of anyone receiving carbon copies of your message you are sending.

Type the subject of the message in this area. This information is important for filing, retrieval and subscribing to mailing lists.

The signature is a special text file that contains your name, title, address... and sometimes a catchy motto or phrase. Because this is a separate file, you don't have to type it in everytime you create a new message.

Most E-mail Client programs will allow you to send other types of documents along with the E-mail over the Internet called attachments. For example, an attachment file can be a graphic, a movie, a sound, or even a database file. Attachments can be very tricky though, and are often not delivered properly because of the translations between the various E-mail systems. Get an E-mail program that supports MIME (Multimedia Internet Mail Extensions) encoding for your attachments.

The Save feature is used to store the contents of the document onto disk for future reference.

The Print feature is used to send the document to your printer for a hard copy.
